Girvan
Ayrshire

Girvan Golf Course shares the same stunning views towards Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde as its more illustrious neighbour Turnberry. The course was designed by James Braid (after whom the first hole was named), and has had few alterations since its inception in 1902. The exposed first eight holes are pure Scottish links, immediately adjacent to the beach, and the second ten holes are parkland providing a variable challenge.

Troon Municipal

35 miles

50 minutes

The three Troon golf courses of Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton all start from a traditional clubhouse that offers a warm welcome and good "Scottish Fayre" to all its guests.

Lochgreen is the best of the trio of municipal courses on the east side of the popular holiday town of Troon. They each offer an excellent golfing experience and at a fraction of the royal fee charged at their more aristocratic neighbours. Lochgreen is the longer course, a Par 74 running parallel at points to Royal Troon and used for several years as a qualifier for the Open. Jack Nicklaus shot an 82 here in an Open Qualifier followed by a more appropriate 68 making the cut buy one shot .

The original Darley Golf Course seems to date from around 1910. The present course, with an original 'bogey' (par) of 71 was opened on June 9th, 1951. If Darley is slightly shorter than Lochgreen it is certainly tighter with unforgiving heather and gorse hugging both sides of many fairways. A relatively benign opening only serves to accentuate the challenge presented by the subsequent holes, with a particularly difficult stretch coming between the 5th and 15th. Darley is indeed a challenge demanding the straightest of tee shots to avoid the renowned Scottish hazards of heather, gorse and whin which abound. Challenging, strategic and a true test of golf is how the locals describe Darley, which, like its sister course Lochgreen is also considered of the links variety. Darley is rated as the fourth most difficult course in Scotland to play to your handicap!

The Fullarton course is situated only minutes away from the great championship links of Royal Troon, and adjacent to Lochgreen and Darley, Fullarton, at slightly less than 5,000 yards, provides endless enjoyment for golfers of more modest ability or golf societies looking for a testing morning warm-up round. Fullarton is an uplands links course, with narrow, undulating fairways generally flanked by heather and gorse. The longest hole is the 1st at 434 yards, of the others, there are six par three holes demanding great precision and accuracy. Golf societies can truly have a great day out at Troon. A local tip is to combine Fullarton with either Lochgreen or Darley for an enjoyable 36 holes.

Belleisle Park, Doonfoot Road, Ayr KA7 4DU

27 Miles

45 minutes

Belleisle, in the main town of Ayr, is far from a course of modest aspiration. Designed by James Braid in 1927, simply to satisfy an increasingly insatiable demand for the game. It is rather a course of genuine and proven quality, providing an enjoyable challenge to hordes of appreciative golfers who are only too happy to sing its many praises.
Belleisle would probably be the best public course in Scotland if it weren't for those upstarts, St Andrews and Carnoustie. Tour players like to sharpen their pencils before major competitions here! Thats how good it is, and surely one of the few true municipals to host professional tournaments.
Belleisle is a classic and a parkland course of genuine character. Set in the harmonious woodland of Belleisle Park, its beech tree lined and extra long fairways are interlaced by the serpentine like Curtecan Burn.

Belleisle Park, Doonfoot Road, Ayr KA7 4DU

27 Miles

There are two 18 hole golf courses within the magnificent grounds of the Belleisle Estate in Ayr. The rightly famous Belleisle Championship parkland course and the less famous, and resultantly sometimes overlooked, Seafield. A classic combination of links and parkland that, although not as long as its more illustrious companion, will test the skills and talents of even the most experienced golfer

Maybole is a delightful nine hole town course that is rather hilly but offers splendid views over the Carrick Hills.Do not be misled by the overall length (the longest hole is 371 yards) and the undulating fairways and small, well protected greens call for shot making of a high standard. For those staying in rural South Ayrshire this little course provides the ideal wake-up call before tackling the more testing tracts.

Dalmilling Golf Club, Westwood Avenue, Ayr KA8 0QY

29 miles

A less obvious choice on the outskirts of Ayr is the 18 hole parkland course of Dalmilling. Set between the famous Racecourse and the A77, this is, as they say, honest and open parkland that plays away from the clubhouse and dips into a rolling valley. The river Ayr borders the southern end of the course, with some of its tributary burns adding interest to the early holes, especially the sixth, a 135 yard par three that is virtually surrounded by water. Playing here you are aware that you are in the heart of "Burns Country", where the famous poet Robert Burns was born and raised.
