Ailsa Course

The world famous Turnberry Hotel stands on a headland looking out across the Firth of Clyde towards the Isle of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre and down on one of the great championship links of the world. Turnberry has had a chequered history. Twice in the last century the courses were dug up to make way for aeroplanes and parts of the old runways are still visible today.

Today, however, there are no aeroplanes to disturb the scene and the Ailsa Course where Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson fought out their famous 'Duel in the Sun' in the 1977 Open Championship, is resplendent once again. The layout of today is the work of eminent golf course architect Mackenzie Ross. Not only long and very demanding, Turnberry is also one of the most beautiful spots on earth to pursue the royal and ancient game.

There are 2 other courses at Turnberry, the Kintyre and Arran

Portland Course

The Portland has been host to the Open Championship a number of times and a memorable one was when Justin Leonard got his hands on the Claret Jug in 1997. Tiger Woods was expected to be the man to beat that week but the American discovered exactly why Scottish links courses have to be treated with care as his title bid came unstuck early on in a gorse bush.

From start to finish this is a fine test of golf, the most famous hole, of course, being the eighth or, as most people will know it, the 'Postage Stamp'. At just 126 yards, it is the shortest on any of the Open courses but there have still been many catalogues of disaster there over the years.

The Old Course

Royal Troon lies at the southern end of that beautiful stretch of Ayrshire coastline where golf was played long before the Troon Golf Club was founded in 1878. The Club became ‘Royal’ in its centenary year of 1978 and was the last of the royal clubs to be so honoured. Several famous architects have been associated with the development of the course at it now stands. Willie Fernie, when he was club professional, James Braid and Alistair MacKenzie of Augusta fame among them.

This is majestic links land with the back nine holes as demanding as any in championship golf.

One of the great links courses in Scotland, the Old Course is a challenging test of golfing ability. With the wind to contend with, and deep rough interspersed with gorse and broom, accurate shot making is essential. Players should make their scores on the outward nine, as the prevailing north-westerly wind can make the back nine extremely difficult.

The Ayrshire Course

The Ayrshire course holds a special place in the golfing history books, having been the venue for the first-ever Open Championship back in 1860. It last staged an Open in 1925 but the Americans in particular love Prestwick and its often unique test of golf.

The first tee sits beside Prestwick Station and the railway line runs all the way down the right-hand side of the opening hole. There are plenty of other holes where a score can come off the tracks, though, the huge 'Cardinal Bunker' providing potential trouble at the third and the 'Himalayas' having to be negotiated at the 206-yard par-3 fifth.
